The more of Thomas Paine I read, the more amused I become with the Christian Right for adopting him.
“Can any man of serious reflection hazard his future happiness upon the belief of a story naturally impossible; repugnant to every idea of decency; and related by persons already detected of falsehood?”
HE’S TALKING ABOUT THE RUDDY BIBLE YOU MASSIVE MENTILEISTS. Although ‘repugnant to every idea of decency’ is pretty strong, I grant you.
In other news, ‘the future’ continues to be amazing because you can get the Complete Works of Thomas Paine here (downloadable as a pdf/Kindle/whatever). For the last year I’ve been having a lovely time using it as a springboard in a drifty sort of column for Norwich Magazine. Who happen to be some of the nicest and most charming people I ever worked for.
